Is anyone here old enough to remember Y2K?
Widespread infrastructure failures, economic collapse, societal breakdown!
Starvation!
These were the concerns that cable news channels and shameless infomercials pitched as we rode into the new millennium.
Doomsday!
I’m not discounting the Y2K issue. Sure, it could cause problems if worldwide computer systems interpreted the year 2000 as 1900. Who wants a technological tsunami to sweep them back a hundred years? I like mobile banking, streaming channels, and grocery delivery services. And how could I forget Amazon Prime? Losing next-day delivery on essential items like 5/16″ hanger bolts would induce cataphonic fits.
But was the Y2K issue as dire as many people predicted?
Y2K certainly wasn’t a non-issue. The United States government and businesses sank $100 billion into the problem. But the nasty two-digit scare didn’t sneak up on the smart guys. They saw it coming years in advance and were on the job.
But many people certainly pounced on the chance to profit from the chaos.
Droves of people spent $4000 on survival kits containing a 2,344-pound collection of dehydrated fruits, soup mixes, and soy-based meat substitutes. The one-ton armageddon survival kit could feed a family of four for a year.
Or you could’ve bought the Y2K Family Survival Guide: A Complete Action Manual for Your Y2K Lifeboat.
Every crisis is a marketing opportunity
Chaos -> Fear -> Irrationality -> Vulnerability -> Marketing Opportunity

Evil, greedy people know this formula. We need to be aware of it as well and not fall for it.
Especially if you’re a Christian.
Christians have a better formula for chaos
21 My child, don’t lose sight of common sense and discernment.
Hang on to them,
22 for they will refresh your soul.
They are like jewels on a necklace.
23 They keep you safe on your way,
and your feet will not stumble.
24 You can go to bed without fear;
you will lie down and sleep soundly.
25 You need not be afraid of sudden disaster
or the destruction that comes upon the wicked,
26 for the Lord is your security.
He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap.”
Proverbs 3:21–26
As Christians, we don’t bury our heads in the sand and deny the presence of trouble. We know problems exist. Jesus told us so.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Take heart, Christian!
Don’t don’t miss the last part. Take heart! Jesus has overcome the world, which means we can when we have the correct mindset.
The Apostle John said,
“Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” 1 John 5:5
So Christian, be an overcomer, praise God through the chaos, and don’t let this world’s insanity overcome you. Or you may end up with a ton of extra food on your hands.
