Don’t despise the day of small beginnings

The cold Corona slid down my throat, contrasting with Ocean Isle Beach’s sweltering late May heat. Jack Johnson expressed his love for banana pancakes as a pair of dolphins frolicked a few feet off the coast. At that moment, I promised myself I would never be in this position again.

The year was 2019, and it was my birthday. The only birthday wish I ever have is to spend it at the beach. But a wish without a plan is as worthless as a car without wheels, and I was completely wheelless.

But my family pulled their tiny monies together to send me to the beach alone for a day. They wanted me to have time to reflect on my poor planning skills.

A Sunny Revelation About Consistency

I never saved for family vacations. My mentality was all-or-nothing. I had the money or didn’t, and our family vacations were as reliable as a politician’s promises.

But the weight of my shame gave way to a flash of common sense. Fifty-two weeks separated me from another birthday, and $50 a week saved automatically yields $2600 in a year. While this kind of cash is hard to find in the sofa cushions on the spur of the moment, I can get my head around $50 a week.

It just takes a plan to save for vacation.

We Can Invest Our Time Consistently

Time works like money in many ways. Instead of dollars and cents, time marks progress with hours, weeks, months, and years. Both are spent, saved, and wasted.

The higher the amount needed for each, the less likely either will happen. If my wife asks me to repaint the staircase spindles, which will ruin my entire weekend, I’ll put the project off until I die, and her next husband can do it. But if I pace the work at three spindles a night, the job gets done, and my wife is happy.

Happy wife, happy life.

How You Can Achieve Any Goal with Consistent Effort

Maybe you’ve wanted to write a book for years, but it’s a monumental task, and you don’t have 500 hours today or tomorrow, so you never start. But do you have an hour a day for the next year and a half?

Sure, you do.

Furthermore, you can make more money in your career with advanced certifications, up to 25-75% more, according to a study by Monster.com. You can find an hour each day at home to enroll in online courses, right? Jump on LinkedIn Premium and take their courses free for 30 days.

Sacrifice an hour of sleep or give up Netflix for a while. Delete your Facebook account and reclaim hours spent scrolling through mindless nonsense. Invest your time wisely and consistently set some aside for your dreams; otherwise, you’re living someone else’s.
