You don’t need to be a hero, but you do possess a superpower

I recently wrote an article stating that your hero isn’t coming and that you should be your own hero.

I am correcting myself today because the secret is much easier than leaping over skyscrapers.

Some people quit reading when they get to the line about being their own hero because past experiences have crippled any semblance of self-confidence. The thought of being a hero is as likely as moonwalking barefoot through the desert without water.

Take heart. You don’t need to be a hero.

But you do have a superpower

What is this superpower?

Consistency.

But many people say they struggle to be consistent at things.

That’s not true.

The 60 pounds I gained since high school proves I can consistently choose Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia over healthy eating habits.

The volumes of TV shows I watched testify to my consistent ability to waste valuable time while drifting aimlessly through life

I slept late every morning with remarkable consistency.

I was elite in my consistent exercise of bad habits.

This potential superpower can also be our nasty arch-villain.

How to make consistency your superpower

However, consistency, applied in productive ways, is a superpower and easy to weaponize. You don’t need to leap tall buildings in a single bound.

Instead, step over tiny obstacles every single day.

A small effort applied every day toward a worthy goal is easy, and when you see positive results, momentum kicks in, and you become unstoppable.

My 4 experiences with the superpower of consistency

1 – Prepping for a real estate course

In June 2020, I enrolled in an online real estate pre-licensing course without realizing how it would change my life. Nor did I understand the commitment necessary for success. The course required 75 hours of live in-class time plus outside study time. About one-third of the applicants in my state fail the exam on their first try.

Then, upon passing the exam, you must take 90 hours of post-licensing classes within 18 months.

What was I thinking?

I work a full-time job and a side hustle, so finding time to study was a challenge. However, I dedicated study time each morning and evening, and most lunch breaks.

This journey comprised 500–600 study hours spread over several months, and I passed the exam on my first attempt.

Small steps every single day. I’ve heard similar mantras for years, but this is first time that I ever walked it and it unlocked the secret superpower of consistency for me.

2 – Reading through the Bible

In February 2021, I decided to read through the entire Bible for 30 minutes each morning. Since then, I have completed reading the Bible four times and I am currently in the process of reading it for the fifth time.

Nothing heroic. Just a daily decision. Baby steps.

3 – Losing all my baby fat

In January 2022, the fat man in the mirror didn’t align with the man God was shaping on the inside, so I decided to lose weight. In seven months, I lost 28 pounds.

4 – Pursuing my purpose

In January 2022, I asked God what I should do with my life. I felt Him say, “What is your slightest inkling, the faintest hint of what you want to do?” My only response was writing.

He said, “Pursue that.

Pursue meant two things —

one) humbly accepting that I didn’t know anything about writing and enrolling in online writing courses.

two) applying what I learned and writing consistently.

I’ve taken 80 course hours (more than double that for notetaking) in 20 courses and earned seven certifications.

Three years ago, I never imagined I would write a book, but I did.

Consistency is easier than you think

No walls have been climbed or walked through.

But I have taken up arms, strapped on the superpower of consistency, and won the battle against bad habits. I now use this superpower for good.

It’s still a daily decision (to stay away from Cherry Garcia).

Tiny micro-decisions made daily amount to a stream of good choices over a week, a month, and a year. This stream triggers the magic of momentum and opens your mind to your untapped God-given potential.

You also have the superpower of consistency. Use it to make your dreams come true.
