Who Can You Count On?

You can’t count on anyone to lift you up when you are down.

That sounds negative and I promise you that I’m not holding a gun to my head right now. But it is true and once we realize that truth, it’s quite liberating. You can’t count on your spouse. You can’t count on your best friend and you can’t even count on your mama.

They will all let you down.

Sure all of these folks do lift us up at times; even lots of times, but to count on something means it’s a sure thing. It happens every time. Like letting go of an apple from your hand. You can count on it falling.

People aren’t that reliable. If they know you are down they don’t always have the right word to lift you up. Sometimes they say the wrong thing with the best intentions. Other times they may not notice you are down and that may bring you down even further. Just to be noticed at times is a lift. But they may be down themselves and can’t lift you because they need a lift themselves but you are so busy being down you didn’t notice them. Or maybe they are distracted by something else.

The liberating part is realizing all of this and releasing everyone from this impossible responsibility. You are freeing yourself from the opportunity to get disappointed the next time they don’t meet your expectation of a quick pick me up.

There is only One who can 100% of the time pick us up.

He is perfect.

He is faithful.

He is all-knowing.

Your down days don’t go unnoticed to Him and His Words are always right.

The lowly he sets on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety. (Job 5:11)

But you, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high. (Psalm 3:3)

He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. (Psalm 40:2)

The next time you need a lift, lift your head and your hands to the only One who can truly help and praise Him.

It will make you feel better. I promise.

I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. (Psalm 63:4)
