Will was upset about going to Tao Kwon Do yesterday.
His big sister, Shelby, is out of town and he’s never been without her. I took him aside, looked him in the eyes and asked him a few questions.
Are they mean to you there?
No.
So, they are nice and treat you well?
Yes.
Are there other young boys in the class?
Yes.
Do they have big brothers or sisters who take the class with them?
Not all of them.
But they go alone, right?
Yes.
I asked these questions so that he could see no logical reason existed for his fear. And as I went through the questions, I could see his load lighten. Then I pumped courage into him by telling him that he is brave, strong and courageous. His load lightened more and his chin began lifting up.
It’s important to speak positive words over our children. Even if they aren’t yet these things, our steady supply of words will help them to believe and become them. As a father, that’s one of my most important responsibilities. To instill confidence and courage into my kids.
And it’s not a contrived thing. It’s based in truth. As believers, we have a Father who wants to inject confidence into us. His Word is filled with DNA descriptors that He wants us to know and believe and become.
“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1)
“Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.” (Romans 8:17)
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” (Ephesians 2:10)
“You are the light of the world. ” (Matthew 5:14)
“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16)
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
“The Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you only will be above, and you will not be underneath, if you listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, which I charge you today, to observe them carefully.” (Deuteronomy 28:13)
“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6)
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. ” (2 Timothy 1:7)
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)
“The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.” (Proverbs 28:1)
“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.” (Isaiah 12:2)
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid”(Psalm 27:1)
If you don’t have anyone pumping positive truths into you, God already has.
Open His Word. Self-inject.
