So I heard that Phil saw his shadow and we have 6 more weeks of Winter ahead.
Or do we?
We make such a fuss over this fat rodent as the great prognosticator of our weather forecast I assumed that his track record must be stellar. Better than Peyton Manning in playoff games(11-12 and 1-2 in Superbowls).
But being the intellectually curious man I am, I decided to run a statistical analysis. Ok, I just did a google search for the answer. You can find everything on the google machine.
39%.
That’s it. According to StormFax Weather Almanac and records kept since 1887, Phil has been accurate 39% of the time.
Ok, Manning’s playoff record is a bit better.
But the stupid groundhog? Why are we still giving him any credence at 39%?
I struggle to get my kids to pay attention to me and I’m right at least twice as much as the rat.
Would you trust your heart surgeon if his success rate was 39%?
If we are seeking reliability at a 100% rate of return, there’s only one source.
The Word of God.
We can count on His promises.
God has a plan to bless and prosper us, not hurt or harm us. Jeremiah 29:11.
All things work out for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purposes. Romans 8:28.
We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Philippians 4:13.
Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one gets to the Father except through Him. John 14:6.
Phil climbs out of his hole every year and we bank the next 6 weeks of our lives on his shadow. Jesus walked out of a grave once and our eternities depend on how we respond to Him.
And that is Truth. Beyond a shadow of a doubt.
I like the comparison between the rodent out of the hole and the king out of the grave very nice.
