The Day Showmars Promised Us Heaven (in Tzatziki Sauce Form)
Many years ago, a real estate developer posted a large sign in my up-and-coming hometown announcing that Showmars would be coming soon. Showmars is a popular restaurant chain in the southeast USA that promotes food that is “Southern-Fresh-Green.”
The town was electric with excitement and nearly threw a parade to celebrate. Showmars’ tzatziki sauce can cure cancer, heal the blind, and make the lame walk. So, we waited with anticipation.
And waited.
And waited.
Years passed, and the legend of a new Showmars never materialized. The entire thing seemed like a cruel joke.
The Broken Promise and Why We Shouldn’t Be Surprised
The sign announcing the restaurant’s coming was basically a promise. The words on the sign didn’t include “maybe,” “possibly,” or “we hope” to soften the blow if the deal blew up.
I shouldn’t be so hard on Showmars.
We all make promises we fail to keep. Unforeseen events happen that alter our best intentions.
Or we just change our minds.
Half of marriages end in divorce, so logic follows that at least 25% of people reconsider their wedding day vows.
Contracts are broken.
RSVPs are reneged on.
Politicians break campaign promises.
Friendships are abandoned.
We even break promises to ourselves.
Humans are an unreliable species.
Beyond Broken Promises: A Promise Keeper We Can Count On
But there is one Promise Keeper who made promises we can count on and should not ignore.
Jesus Christ said He would return one day for His followers.
If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. John 14:3 (NASB)
The Rapture: God’s Promise for A Heavenly Escape Plan
In Christian circles, we call this glorious day the rapture of the Church. Those who repented of their sins and confessed Jesus Christ as their Savior will meet Jesus in the air and go with Him to Heaven.
The Apostle Paul described it this way:
For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (NASB)
Don’t Be Left Behind: The Uncomfortable Truth
Then, in the twinkling of an eye, we will be spectators as God pours out His wrath on humanity during the Great Tribulation. You don’t want to be left behind on the planet during this horrific time. God is merciful and will give you one more chance to accept Jesus as your Savior during the Tribulation, but it will eventually cost your life.
Don’t fret. The nanosecond after death, you will join the spectators in Heaven. But those who continue to deny Christ during the Tribulation will spend eternity gnashing their teeth in the eternal flames of Hell.
Finding Hope in God’s Unbreakable Promises
Too many broken promises have made us jaded about them, but the Bible’s promises have never been proven wrong. Your best friend from childhood may have let you down, but Jesus never will.
Put your hope and trust in Him, and let’s meet in the clouds.
